The Four Agreements

If you’ve been following along with my travels so far then you might already know how much I love Byron Bay. While I learnt so much during my four months living and working in Byron, there is one piece (or four pieces) of advice that still sticks with me. A friend of who lived in our community told me about them and they made me feel so much better. I still replay them in my mind when I need a little pick me up!
If you’re feeling like you need a extra nudge of encouragement, then read on 🙂

The Four Agreements

1. Be impeccable with your word.  Be honest and clear with the words you use to yourself and others. Make a conscious effort to screen the thoughts of your mind. Weed out the negative, unproductive ones and allow the positive, uplifting ones to flourish.

2. Don’t take anything personally. Respect that the way someone else sees the world does not have anything to do with you or your character. You have no idea what’s going on in their inner world. There are 7 billion people on this planet and life happens to all of us, the good and the bad. We all get our fair share of both, don’t take the hands that are dealt too personally, it’s not just you.

3. Don’t make assumptions. This one plays upon the last, don’t assume someone/something doesn’t like you because of something they said or didn’t say. You are not a mind reader, don’t bother trying to be. It’ll only consume precious mental energy that could be used towards something better.

4. Always do your best. This is one if pretty straightforward. As long as you are doing your best and being the best person you can be, you can rest easy at night. If the best is not good enough then at least you know in your heart you did everything you could and can move on without regret.
