Memento Mori

We can choose to meet death like a great opponent about to begin an epic sword fight. We grow in size by our ability to live life in its absolute fullness. We let no moment of beauty pass under our nose without sniffing it and hugging it and holding it close.

The end of summer always makes me feel melancholic. ⁣ ⁣ "Wherever you go, there you are" certainly rings true in these moments. Even in Australia.⁣ ⁣ It's a time of reflection as I think back on why I've never really been a winter person. ⁣ ⁣ I can remember a stage in my life when winters were filled with excitement and adventure. When I was about 5 years old, Elizabeth was 6, and we were living in Ottawa. The temperature would go down to -20. Nowadays, the thought of living in a city that gets that cold absolutely repels me.⁣ ⁣ But as a kid, winter was the season for skating on the Rideau Canal, building snowmen, tobogganing...⁣ ⁣ Behind our house was a large snow pile that was dumped from snow trucks clearing off neighborhood streets. To my sister and I, this snow pile was Mount Everest. We would break off twigs from branches and pretend they were ice picks, using them to make our way up the treacherous mountain, screaming at each other through our make-believe walkie-talkies. "Roger! Are you gonna make it? Roger! Do you copy?!" this game was my favorite because the set-up was real, we were on Everest on a complex mission that could cost us our lives. ⁣ ⁣ I remember one fascinating game that went on for so long, my mum had to call us in. We ran home and discovered we both had a little bit of frostbite on our nose and cheeks. I remember looking at my face in the mirror and seeing that my cheeks had turned white from the cold. I could not believe it, it felt like our game was real, just like the movies.
Nothing beats that mountain air 🏔✨

As Ernest Hemingway famously said "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” #Pouryourheartout
Summertime sweetness!☀️
If only I could ship this little munchkin over to Australia for a much needed cuddle. I’m quite sure seeing a kangaroo is on his bucket-list of things to do. Actually yes it is, we’ve had this conversation before. Kangaroos are his favorite animal.
